DESCRIPTION

The design of this shoe features a painting by Baltimore artist Megan Lewis, titled “Still don’t know John Wayne.” This design speaks to many values near and dear to our mission, such as working with up-and-coming talent throughout the city of Baltimore, and sheds light on the many untold stories of Black history. Megan is one of Baltimore’s most promising artists and her piece touches on the rarely told history of Black cowboys in America. About one in four cowboys of the 19th century were Black, yet we do not see them represented in the majority of stories and renditions of that time period. Lastly, on the back of the shoes you will see the words “Shuffle Along” which pays homage to Eubie Blake’s most well-known musical.
