Leave It on the Court and Slimes

Eubie Blake Cultural Center presents Chrystal Seawood’s Leave it All on the Court and Slimes installations. Seawood’s work combats the externalization of her subjects by emphasizing their true human nature. She believes that her work serves as an act of justice for communities that have been stereotyped and objectified.

Her Leave it All on the Court installation serves as a space where her subjects (Black Masculine Youth) can express their emotions without apprehension. The exhibition will feature a short film, a soundscape, a basketball shoe installation, and stories of basketball players from varied skill levels.

The exhibition Slimes shares the memories of one of Seawood’s former students and his friends. Several of them have been experiencing many hardships in their day-to-day life. Such as incarceration, being pushed out of school, threats to their lives, and displacement. As a way of countering negative portrayals, Seawood’s exhibition is dedicated to their benignity and playfulness. Using references from their social media pages, Seawood took faces away from their portraits to counter any preconceived notion that onlookers might expect. Instead of reacting to the people they are on the outside, she wants the viewer to have an emotional response to color.
